The United States of America finds itself at a particularly fragile point in its history as we celebrate July 4th. Spurred on by the divisive presidency of Barack Obama, many groups within America have been turning their backs on the country that has given them so much.
Some singers and filmmakers were interviewed about their plans for celebrating Independence Day, and their responses were dismaying. Liberal activist filmmaker Christopher Phillips, who created the documentary Ferguson 365, says that he feels unmotivated to celebrate our country’s founding. He is resentful that police officers were not sent to jail for shooting black men. Said Christopher, “Justice apparently doesn’t apply to all people. A lot of people have lost hope.”
Janette McClelland, a black singer based out of New Mexico, stated that she is not going to do anything to mark Independence Day. She claimed, “It’s a white man’s holiday to me. It’s just another day. I’m not going to even watch the fireworks. Not feeling it.”
Coard added, “Thomas Jefferson — who was the primary drafter of the Declaration of Independence — enslaved 175 Black women, men, and children in 1776 and 267 by 1822. Also, he was a racist pedophile who began raping Sally Hemings when she was 14-years-old. And he impregnated her seven times.” Are you disturbed by this lack of patriotism on July 4th?
